6 Ways To Practice Self-Care On Your Period

I always looked forward to the day I’d finally get my period. When I first got my period, I felt so deceived! It was nothing like the commercials for sanitary pads and tampons where babes were running around all happy with no worries. I got cramps, my moods were all over the place, my cravings were intense and not to mention the few leaks and stains I experienced here & there. Kwanza my first period came during a graduation party but that’s a story for another day.

After my first few experiences, I began to dread my period and the only purpose they served me for a long time after I began being sexually active was as an indication that I wasn’t preggers. I know I’m not the only one who’s ever dreaded their period. In fact, I know there’s still babes out here who still feel the same and honestly, who can blame them? I’ve come to embrace that my period is my time to be easy on myself and treat myself with some extra TLC. This means listening to my wants and needs (and doing what’s practical & good for me) and doing nice things for myself intentionally & unapologetically. This makes my experience that much more bearable. So in today’s post, I’m sharing my favorite self-care activities for that time of the month.

Rest, Better Yet, SLEEP

Regularly, we need good and adequate sleep and we need it more during our period. It’s common to feel tired during that time of the month, I mean your body is doing the most. Good sleep during your period can help you feel more energetic and can also help regulate your hormones. I’ve been told by some ladies that they find it hard to sleep at night during their period, if that’s the case for you and you can find some time to take a nap, do that! If not, you can come up with a night-time routine tailored to your period needs. This can look like taking some calming herbal teas, taking a warm shower, reading a book etc.

Indulge In Some Extra Body-lovin’

Everyone is different. What I like may not necessarily be what you like. That being said, it’s no secret that some vulva-having humans like to get their freak on during their period, and others just don’t feel comfortable doing that. If you enjoy period sex and your partner doesn’t mind, go for it! Tune in to what your body wants. If that’s not your jam, still take the time to show your body some love. This can look like taking extra long showers, getting a massage, whatever it means for you to truly pamper your body, do it!

Hydrate

I know, I know, we’re always hearing that we need to drink water, but staying hydrated during your period is super useful. It’s helpful for reducing cramps & bloating as well as replenishing body fluids.

Pay Attention To Your Needs

Your body will always tell you what you need to know. So a good way to be of service to yourself is by taking note of your body’s needs and behaviors during your period. For example, if a certain food makes your cramps worse, take note of that and avoid that (I’ve heard some people say that sugar makes their cramps worse). If a certain food makes you more bloated, avoid that as well (bananas really make me bloated during my period so I avoid them). If you need some hot chocolate to lift your spirits, go for it!

Nutrition & Body Movement

This is one of those self-care activities that fall under the love language of acts of service. Your body is going through an intense phase and giving it the nutrients it needs is super important. You have lower levels of iron, zinc & magnesium during your period and some of your cravings are letting you know what you’re missing. So be mindful about what you’re eating and give yourself some space to have a cookie or two -it’s called balance haha! About body movement, if intense workouts don’t sound appealing during this time ‘cause you’re more tired, swap your workout for something slower or more gentle. This could be a walk, some yoga, gentle running etc. Many people report that exercise helps make cramps more bearable.

Heat!

Using heat is effective for reducing cramps and relieving muscle tension. You could get a heating pad, a hot water bottle, or take a warm shower/bath. These work especially when you’re applying heat to your abdomen. Having a hot cup of tea or some hot chocolate is a great way to incorporate heat too. Using heat in whatever way will also make you feel more relaxed. You can make a DIY heating pad by filling a sock with raw rice and microwave it for a few minutes.

Finally dear reader, be kind & gentle with yourself. You’re bleeding for about a week and as if that’s not enough, it can be accompanied by some unpleasant side effects. So give yourself some grace if there are some things that you’ll struggle with doing. If you’re unintentionally irritable or grumpy with someone, apologize for it & make it up to them but don’t beat yourself about it. If you don’t meet your fitness goals for the day, don’t dwell on that and try again when you can. You’re going through a difficult time and doing your best. You don’t need to do more.

-All the love, Wendy xx
